I believe that the harassment of human rights defender Ivan Pavlov and his wife is indicative of a wider approach taken by the Russian authorities to pressurise individuals and organisations working on human rights in the Russian Federation to register as ‘foreign agents’.

(YORK)  On 19 August 2014 in Saint-Petersburg, a decision was upheld to deport Ms Jennifer Gaspar, a citizen of the USA. Jennifer Gaspar is the wife of human rights lawyer Mr Ivan Pavlov, Chairperson of the Board of the Institute for Freedom of Information Development Foundation, an independent non-governmental organisation campaigning for transparency in government and providing regular public monitoring of state authorities.

(NEW YORK)  The Prime Minister of the Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam, Mr. Visuvanathan Rudrakumaran, has urged the Secretary General of UN not to allow President Rajapaksa to address the General Assembly on 25 September 2014. That will teach Rajapaksa a lesson that he cannot get away with murder all the time.

End of the line: GMO production in China halted

“We believe that loopholes in assessing and monitoring [GMO] research, as well as the public concern around safety issues are the most important reasons that the certifications have not been renewed,” Wang Jing, a Greenpeace official in Beijing

In a surprise U-turn, China’s Ministry of Agriculture has decided not to continue with a program which developed genetically-modified rice and corn. Some environmentalists say public concerns about GM crops played a key role in the decision.

On August 17, when these permits were up for renewal, the Ministry of Agriculture decided not to extend them. In 2009, the ministry’s Biosafety Committee issued approval certificates to develop the two crops, rice and corn.

Hussein for Peace, a Gaza contact for Global News Centre, examines the wreckage from Israel's recent attacks on Gaza

Hussein for Peace, a Gaza contact for Global News Centre, examines the wreckage from Israel’s recent attacks.

“Gaza isn’t the most beautiful city. Its shore isn’t blue like some Arab cities. Gaza’s oranges aren’t the most delicious in the Mediterranean! Gaza isn’t the richest city. It isn’t the most elegant nor the biggest but it holds the vast history of a large nation even though, in the eyes of the enemy, Gaza is miserable and ugly.” — Mahmoud Darwish of Gaza.

Rana Alshami for Global News Centre

(KHAN YUNIS, Gaza) In Gaza we lose souls day and night! Gaza is the land of Martyrs! Gaza is bleeding because the world believes in the power of Israel’s propaganda. Gaza resists in order to exist. Gaza simply asks to live in peace and Israel violates international law over and over again while continuing to justify its hideous war crimes.

“Exodus” now hurling real 5,000 pound bombs

exodusExodus, the novel by Leon Uris, was far removed from the reality of Palestine in 1948.

Dr. James Wall Global News Centre

(CHICAGO)  Israel still retains absolute mind control over the western world, thanks to the selling of an Israel narrative which was boosted high into the literary lights and onto movie screens with the fictional Israeli narrative written by Leon Uris in 1954.

After its publication, the novel Exodus became the guide book for all who studied, traveled, or gave even the slightest attention to the start of the modern nation of Israel in 1947-48.

On my Encounter with Intellectuals among Sinhala Speakers

Peter Schalk

Peter Schalk

Resilient and defiant intellectuals among Sinhala speakers have a potential to form and lead a Sinhala Resistance Movement for democracy and to initiate a de-sinhalatva-fication from primary schools to universities.

Article by Peter Schalk

The article “Diplomatic misstep” in TamilNet, Friday, 25 December 2009, which is about a well documented verbal misbehaviour of Professor Rajiva Wijesinha actualises an important problem of responsibility of intellectuals Sinhala speakers which I have taken up in another article in TamilNet. Here I tell about my encounter with different types of intellectuals who have chosen to abandon the academic discourse and become mercenary intellectuals of a political regime.

The Drift Of Hugo Rifkind

Under international law all parties involved in a conflict, must whether state or non state armed actors, respect international humanitarian law. The aim of which is to regulate conduct during hostilities and respect for human rights law.

Clive Hambidge & Soraya Boyd Global News Centre

(LONDON)  Poor Hugo Rifkind has been drifting lately. He has said so much in an article for the Times (Tuesday 12 August 2014, Opinion, page 27). But do you get his drift? Does anyone get his drfit? What on earth is he drifting on about? Is it to do with Israel drifting rockets into Gaza and drifting propaganda into the world’s media and political institutions? Is it because he sees the lack of ‘drift’ in public opinion that recognises Israel’s illegal occupation and terrorisation of Palestinians in Gaza and and the West Bank. Is it because of the indiscriminate targeting of women and children in Gaza? Does this barbaric conduct not constitute a war crime? Certainly International Humanitarian Law is breached on a daily basis by Israel. And so because of this, we did not drfit, we marched because we know the facts and thus stand with every mother and father who have seen their sons and daughters targeted and slaughtered by the IDF.

Open on Sundays… Ed Clark: you can take it to the bank

“Are you kidding? We’re supposed to be spread lenders. And besides, it’s very hard to run an economy with very low interest rates and not have asset bubbles” – Ed Clark

William Annett Global News Centre

(DAYTONA BEACH)   Ed Clark is CEO of the TD (Formerly Toronto-Dominion) Bank Group, which lately has been scoring big time in the American banking game. That’s been happening for a couple of reasons. First, you need a bit of background, because contrary to popular wisdom, Canada is not just a junior, 10% version of the U.S. of A. It’s just different. Vive la difference.

For starters, Canada has a parliamentary system. The best way to explain that is to say that if America had a parliamentary system, John Boehner would be the Prime Minister and Barack Obama would be just a figurehead Governor General (responsible for nothing but cutting ribbons on ceremonial occasions and entertaining foreign dignitaries). Imagine that.

Foley’s Horrifying Death, ISIS is a cancer that must be eliminated

isis-kill

Sign from Ferguson, Mo. paints a tragic and humorous picture of America’s priorities.

I would rather build bridges than walls. But in this age there is an evil mindset that is determined to eliminate America’s freedom.

Glenn Mollette Global News Centre

(NEWBURGH, Indiana) The beheading of American journalist James Foley was horrifying.  My prayers are with his family. May God comfort Foley’s soul in eternity.

Foley was one of our sons, brothers and friends. He was an American. I don’t see how we can sleep in this country until we destroy ISIS.

ISIS, is a world cancer and must be eliminated. I realize they are a long way from America, but cancer spreads fast.
