The Climate Talks in Paris will fail: why?

Despite this readily available information, governments continue to prioritise spending $US2,000,000,000 each day on military violence,…

(TASMANIA)  As expectations build for a global consensus to emerge from the United Nations climate conference in Paris, starting on 30 November 2015, that could agree to taking action to limit any rise in global temperature to 2 degrees celsius, I would like to explain why these expectations are misplaced. And what we can do about it.

In memory of Cecil the Lion: let’s hunt with cameras not guns

The late Cecil the Lion

The late Cecil the Lion

The  brouhaha following the killing of Cecil the Lion by Dr. Walter Palmer, an American dentist, has put a much needed spotlight on so-called trophy hunting, the stalking and killing of wild animals for sport.

(SAN FRANCISCO)  My wife and I were privileged to go on a number of African safaris in Botswana, South Africa, Namibia, Kenya, Tanzania, and even Zimbabwe.  We watched animals; we did not shoot them except with a camera.  We went on each safari in an open land rover.  The animals in the game reserve are so used to land rovers, we could drive within a few feet of animals with little or no notice.  Viewing wild animals up close in their natural habitat is fascinating and very entertaining.  We watched female elephants with their young.  The babies were cute trying to learn how to maneuver their trunks to put food in their mouths.  We watched a group of lionesses stalking a herd of cape buffalo waiting for one to stray from the herd; a female cheetah stalking and then killing an impala; huge crocodiles sunning themselves; silver-backed gorillas with their families; chimpanzees and all sorts of monkeys and baboons; a wide variety of birds; thousand upon thousands of wildebeests gathering for their annual migration north; giraffes; hyenas; zebras; deer and antelope; hippos; lemurs; and white black rhinos; and much more.

Lawsuit says toxins manufactured by agrochemical giant ‘have been found in Bay sediments and water and have been identified in tissues of fish, lobsters, and other marine life’

By Sarah Lazarre / Common Dreams

(SAN DIEGO)  San Diego authorities filed a lawsuit on Monday (March 16) against the agrochemical giant Monsanto, accusing the corporation of polluting the city’s bay with carcinogenic chemicals that are so dangerous to human health they were banned in the U.S. more than 30 years ago.

The lawsuit was filed in federal court by City of San Diego and San Diego Unified Port District and focuses on Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs). “PCBs manufactured by Monsanto have been found in bay sediments and water and have been identified in tissues of fish, lobsters, and other marine life in the Bay,” the complaint reads.

“We have brought torture, cluster bombs, depleted uranium, innumerable acts of random murder, misery, degradation and death to the Iraqi people and call it ‘bringing freedom and democracy to the Middle East’. – Harold Pinter

(DULUTH)  A couple of days ago I received a letter from the mother of a post-adolescent daughter, expressing a common concern that millions of parents share. She wrote, in part,

“It seems to me that my daughter and her classmates have more depression and mood disorders than in my day (the 60s and 70s). I know at least one other parent who wonders if there’s a cause – the water, vaccines, all of the above.

Iraq and Afghanistan veterans poisoned by open burn pits

The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the use of open burn pits have exposed thousands of veterans to dangerous chemicals.

VA insists there are no long-term health effects of exposure to burn pits. Veterans sue defense contractors.

(SALEM)  Dioxin is one of the deadly toxins from incomplete combustion from open burn pits. This is the same carcinogen found in Agent Orange and other herbicides used in Vietnam, killing thousands of veterans.

“Combustion byproducts” is a common term for the chemical mixture that is caused by burning petroleum fuels (e.g., gasoline, heating oil, jet fuel, and diesel).

(DAYTONA BEACH)   My neighbor Warren doesn’t understand how much the petroleum industry has turned the economy around in the last few years. Just the other day over the back fence, he was belittling – even criticizing – our breakthrough in extractive technology. That is, until I set him straight.

“Just think of where we are today,” I pointed out, “compared with just a few years ago, when we were dependent on those wogs in the Middle East for the very oil we breathe – I mean, burn.”

(DULUTH)  In his 1960 farewell address, the moderate Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower tried to warn us naïve and trusting Americans about the nefarious agendas of the amoral, pro-corporate, pro-war, imperialistic military/industrial (i.e., corporate)/national security/congressional complex (especially the weapons industries, the Pentagon, the CIA, and the FBI) that Ike had seen acquiring excessive power during his administration.

Global warming deniers in Congressional driver’s seat

The disinformation campaign has had its effect on public opinion. According to an April 2014 Gallup poll, one in four polled is not worried about global warming much, or at all.

Following the midterm elections, Republicans remain firmly in control of the U.S. House of Representatives and now enjoy a majority in the U.S. Senate.  Senator James Inhofe (R-Ok) is expected to become Chairman of the Environmental and Public Works Committee (EPW).

The EPW controls the Environmental Protection Agency, which is charged with addressing climate change and what to do about it. Inhofe is probably the most idiotic global warming denier in Congress, who has called it a hoax.  Given the evidence of global warming, we can only shake our heads at Inhofe’s likely chairmanship of this important committee.

Tackling the climate catastrophe strategically

climate_change1Corporations (using their elite fora, industry organisations, front groups, think tanks, political and judicial lackeys, lobbyists, ‘philanthropic’ organisations, corporate media and co-opted NGOs) long ago seized control of governments and key international organisations, such as the United Nations.

(TASMANIA) If you like to ask or beg your oppressor to go easy on you, then you do not need to read this article. And if you like to do what makes you feel good at the time, irrespective of its strategic impact, then this article is not for you either. My interest in tackling violence, in whatever form it takes, has always been to take action myself that leaves the perpetrator powerless (but, hopefully, a convert too). I also like to be strategic so that the impact of my action is long-lasting (in fact, preferably permanent) and structurally reduces the violence in our world. Here’s how I work.

Shame on Congress

congressIs Congress thinking about the threat of another war? Are they thinking about the thousands of our veterans who need help? Is the VA scandal settled? No to these issues and many others.

John J. Bury Global News Centre

(MEDIA, Pa.)   Congress does it again. They took a 5 week recess in August to campaign, went back to DC September 8th. Now another recess days later to campaign. What is wrong with Congress? The ISIS threat is on the table, our President needs backing on this explosive situation, There are Congressional Bills requiring attention, where is Congress, on vacation to campaign.
